A gifted trial lawyer, Smith began his career as a federal prosecutor in the Homicide and Violent Crime Sections of the United States Attorney’s Office. His work earned him both the Attorney General’s Award and the Award for Outstanding Trial Attorney. He later became a partner at two of the nation’s leading law firms, Latham & Watkins and Patton Boggs, representing some of America’s largest corporations in complex, high-stakes matters.

Smith then stepped into one of the most demanding leadership positions in professional sports. For nearly fifteen years, he served as Executive Director of the NFL Players Association, guiding players through two landmark collective bargaining agreements spanning twenty years. He represented athletes in defining moments—including Tom Brady, Colin Kaepernick, and New Orleans Saints players during the “Bountygate” controversy—and led transformative advances in concussion protocols, player health, and on-field safety.

As CEO of the NFLPA’s wholly owned business subsidiary, Smith also delivered sustained double-digit growth and helped create the first cross-sport athlete licensing and marketing company—an enterprise now valued at more than $2 billion.
